The Mechanism of Osmotic Regulation in Artemia Salina (l.): the Physiology of the Gut
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION In preceding papers various aspects of the osmotic regulation of Artemia have been described (Croghan, 19586, c). The importance of the branchial mechanism excreting NaCl has been discussed (Croghan, 1958c), but it is clear that in order to maintain a haemolymph steady state in hypertonic media a mechanism for the active uptake of water must also be present. The gut epithelium appears to be the most permeable part of Artemia, and it seems clear that in hypertonic media it is across this epithelium that there will be the greatest tendency for NaCl to enter and for water to leave the haemolymph (Croghan, 19586). In this paper further studies on the physiology of the gut in relation to osmotic regulation are described. The gut of Artemia is a simple straight tube formed of a single layer of epithelial cells, and has in the head region a pair of small globular diverticula. A thin peritrophic membrane is present in the gut tube.

The Mechanism of Osmotic Regulation in Artemia Salina (l.): the Physiology of the Branchiae
INTRODUCTION In a previous paper (Croghan, 19586) the very great osmo-regulating ability of Artemia has been described. It is clear that in concentrated media the animal must have very well-developed active mechanisms both for excreting NaCl and for taking up water to compensate for the passive movements of these substances into and out of the animal. The staining of localized parts of Crustace...

The present study investigates the effects of different routes of inulin administration as prebiotic on gut microbiota and survival rate of Indian white shrimp post-larvae. Four hundred and fifty Indian white shrimp post-larvae (PL1) were stocked in nine tanks. The tanks were assigned into three treatments: feeding with inulin-treated (110 mg L-1) Artemia nauplii ...
متن کاملComparison of the growth, survival and nutritional value of Artemia using various agricultural by-products and unicellular algae Dunaliella salina
Because of limitations of production of unicellular green algae (especially in large volumes), this study aimed to culture Artemia using three sources of cheap agricultural by-products that were coupled with small amounts of unicellular algae Dunaliella salina. The results of growth and survival, biomass production, Individual wet weight, wet and ash percent, FCR and SGR and nutritional value o...
متن کاملPhototoxicity activity of Psoralea drupacea L. using Atremia salina bioassay system
Objective: Phototoxicity is a kind of dermatitis that is activated by exposure to ultraviolet light following the administration of some drugs or natural products. Artemia salina (A. salina) (brine shrimp) has been effectively applied for toxicity testing and is perfect for biological screening of many chemicals for simultaneous evaluation of toxicity and phototoxicity. The objective of this st...
